From the very premiere of Stranger Things to this moment, the show has practically grown with us. A journey that has seen the younger cast grow and the older ones mature even more; it is finally coming to an end. Netflix is going above and beyond to make sure it's a memorable goodbye.
From each episode being the length of a feature film to the release schedule being split in two, there is still time until we witness the end of the series. That is, the New Year will come with a big bang.
Stranger Things Is Hitting The Big Screens © Netflix
It was just revealed via Puck News that for Stranger Things' series finale, Netflix is following the same strategy that it did with KPop Demon Hunters. Following the success of the animated film, a sing-along version was released in theatres, one that made huge numbers. Basking in that glory, the doors are now opening for a theatrical release of Stranger Things.
Reportedly, the series finale will be aired side by side in theatres and on Netflix. To put the cherry on top, the episode is set to air on New Year's Eve, making the theatrical experience such that you end the series and your year in a grand manner.
Seeing the anticipation that fans have, this decision was made. Interestingly, there were previously no plans to let the episode hit the theatres.
This would make the viewing experience so much more impactful. Not only would the community of people you watch the episode with increase, but it also won't feel like a waste of money because of the episode's length. It would be even better if it is available to watch on IMAX theatres.
Is Netflix Making The Right Decision? © Netflix
The answer is both yes and no. On one hand, people will jump at the opportunity of watching the Stranger Things finale in theatres. On the other hand, since it's releasing on New Year's Eve, it could interfere with many people's party plans.

This is perfect for fans who want the theatrical experience. New Year's Eve release is smart timing

The episodes will be as long as a movie anyways so it makes sense!

With how big the fanbase of the show is, it can be argued that Netflix's decision of simultaneously releasing the episode on the streaming platform and cinemas is genius.
For those who have waited years for this episode, one New Year's Eve means very little. The best thing they can do is make sure these screenings aren’t limited and available across the world for fans to see.
