Mumbai News: Youth Congress Chief Akhilesh Yadav Remanded To 1-Day Police Custody For Protest Outside ED Office

Mumbai: Youth Congress president Akhilesh Yadav has been remanded to one-day police custody for allegedly locking the Enforcement Directorate (ED) office located in Ballard Pier Estate during a protest. Yadav was arrested late Saturday night from Andheri by MRA Marg Police Station, following a Protest by Youth Congress workers outside the ED office, which was closed due to a public holiday.

The protest, held around 3 PM on Saturday, was in opposition to a chargesheet filed by the ED against senior Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi. According to Mumbai Police, 15–20 Youth Congress workers gathered outside the ED office, raising slogans against the central government and the agency, and recorded a video of the incident, which later went viral on social media.

MRA Marg Police has registered a case and taken cognisance of the video footage. According to Deputy Commissioner of Police Pravin Mundhe (Zone 1), the ED office gate was locked with a chain by a security guard at the time of the protest. Despite this, demonstrators assembled and carried out the protest.

Yadav's lawyers have alleged that the police invoked non-bailable sections such as criminal trespass under pressure, calling it an attempt to suppress political dissent. They also claimed that the FIR included Section 447 (criminal trespass) unfairly.

Meanwhile, police have confirmed that a formal FIR has been registered at MRA Marg Police Station, and further action is underway. The Youth Congress termed the chargesheet against Rahul and Sonia Gandhi politically motivated and accused the central government of misusing investigative agencies to target opposition leaders.
