Guru Nanak Jayanti, also known as Guru Parv or Prakash Parv, marks the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism and the first Sikh Guru. It is the most important and sacred festival in Sikhism, celebrated with great devotion across the world.
In 2025, Guru Nanak Jayanti will be celebrated on November 5, coinciding with Kartik Purnima. This year marks the 556th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. The celebration begins two days earlier with Akhand Path, a continuous 48-hour recitation of the Guru Granth Sahib. The festivities include processions (Nagar Kirtan), devotional singing, and large community feasts (Langar), where everyone, irrespective of religion or background, is welcomed.
The Teachings of Guru Nanak Dev JiGuru Nanak Dev Ji’s message was based on humanity, equality, and truth. His philosophy can be summed up in three guiding principles —
Naam Japo, Kirat Karo, and Vand Chhako, which together form the essence of Sikh life.
Let’s understand what these three teachings mean and why they are still deeply relevant today.
1. Naam Japo – Chant the Name of God“Naam Japo” means to remember and chant the name of God. It’s not just about repeating words — it’s about keeping divine consciousness alive in every action and thought. Guru Nanak taught that by remembering God constantly, one attains peace, humility, and inner strength.
2. Kirat Karo – Work Honestly“Kirat Karo” means to earn a living through honest and sincere work. Guru Nanak emphasized that wealth should come through integrity, hard work, and righteousness — not through deceit or exploitation. Every job or task, when done with honesty and dedication, becomes a form of worship.
3. Vand Chhako – Share with Others“Vand Chhako” means to share what you have with those in need — whether it’s food, wealth, or time. This principle teaches compassion and community spirit. The tradition of Langar, where everyone eats together regardless of status or religion, beautifully reflects this value of equality and sharing.
The Relevance TodayIn today’s fast-paced and competitive world, Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s teachings are a timeless reminder of balance — to stay spiritually grounded, work with honesty, and live selflessly. “Naam Japo, Kirat Karo, Vand Chhako” encourages us to find peace within, remain humble in success, and contribute to society with kindness.
