Otis Worldwide Corporation, a global leader in elevator manufacturing with a presence in India for over 70 years, has called for stricter regulations on lifts to improve public safety and promote modernization. The company, which installed its first lift in India in 1892 at Kolkata’s Raj Bhavan and now operates in over 800 cities, sees India as its fastest-growing market.
CEO and President Judy Marks explained that while the Middle East is also developing rapidly, India stands out for prioritizing energy efficiency, safety, and affordability. With growing infrastructure investment, a rising middle class, and increased demand for residential lifts—especially for elderly convenience—India remains central to Otis’ growth strategy in South Asia.
Marks emphasized that tougher lift laws would reduce accidents, raise public awareness about safety, and push modernization, an area she sees as the biggest business opportunity worldwide. Of the 2.2 crore lifts globally, around 80 lakh are over 20 years old and in need of upgrades.
She also pointed out that while Indian-made lifts are among the most affordable in the world, this price competitiveness limits revenue compared to other markets. Nevertheless, Otis plans to work closely with the Government of India to develop and enforce stricter standards, ensuring that lift infrastructure keeps pace with modern safety, efficiency, and reliability requirements.
