Cuttack/Sambalpur: The Orissa High Court has granted bail to Pritiman Dey, an accused in the death of Chinmayi Priyadarshini Sahoo, an alumnus of Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology (VSSUT), Burla.
While hearing the matter, the court observed that evidence were not adequate to establish that Chinmayee’s death was a case of murder with police investigations and reports pointing to suicide.
A friend of Chinmayi, Pritiman was arrested in April on the direction of the HC on charges of abetment to suicide.
Chinmayi, a resident of Madanpur in Kalahandi district, went missing on February 28, 2023, after allegedly jumping off the power channel bridge in Sambalpur hours after receiving her degree at the university’s convocation programme. Her body was recovered the next morning.
Her family members moved the HC, alleging that she was murdered. Following which the case was reopened and Pritiman was arrested.
During the probe, police had submitted before the court that Chinmayee’s death was due to drowning. The postmortem report as well as the diatom test confirmed drowning as the cause of death.
