One couple's Egyptian escape turned into a nightmare rather than the dream they envisioned.
Egypt, famed for its awe-inspiring pyramids, affordable eats, and plenty of winter sunshine, sometimes falls short of traveller's dreams.
A Spanish TikToker has raised alarm bells over safety concerns in , particularly for female tourists. Archie Ted and his girlfriend Angela Marmol shared their experiences online after visiting the popular tourist spot.
In his initial video, Archie claimed he experienced people trying to rip him off. He said: "They never stop trying to scam you."
What's more, there were times his partner felt very uncomfortable. He added: "The discomfort and intimidation my girlfriend felt in Egypt is beyond belief."
He added: "Right from the start, when we touched down in Cairo, fifteen lads began tailing us down the street, shouting at her, making lewd gestures, and causing her tremendous anxiety."
The pair felt like they had eyes boring into them as they walked around. Archie elaborated: "almost all the men on the street were giving her intense stares".
Archie slammed the attention as "disgusting" - and shared a specific incident in the desert where, after shortly leaving her alone to purchase water, she was accosted by a man who made her "feel very uncomfortable" and was "saying things to her."
Additionally, a van packed with men passed by, throwing remarks at her.
He highlighted that these distressing incidents happened in various cities and towns across Egypt.
Ted issued a stark warning, stating: "If you are a girl, the last thing I recommend is coming to Egypt alone."
He described the daily harassment as "This was constant, every day, multiple times a day" and urged caution.
Ted said: "If you are going to come to Egypt, keep it very much in mind that it is a very nice place, but this side of the coin is not nice at all."
His video has rapidly garnered more than 22,000 views within a mere two days, prompting an outpouring of similar tales in the comments section.
One commenter substantiated his claims, writing: "It had to be said, and it was said! I went with my sister, and it was horrible-the pursuit, lecherous looks, attempts at groping.."
However, another user suggested it could be down to the region you choose. One said: "Yes, they will shout at you. In more coastal cities on the Red Sea, you can wear whatever you want; they are much more accustomed to tourists and people dressing as they please."
While Archie and his partner didn't have the best experience, it doesn't mean you won't love Egypt. Millions of international tourists visit each year - and plenty have a wonderful time.
Before booking a flight, it's important to look into Foreign Office advice. Currently, FCDO advises against all but essential travel to the area west of the Nile Valley and Nile Delta. There are some exceptions, but do check the website before flying.
