Prince Louis' nursery 'haunted' by bizarrely named 'wild' ghost

Throughout over 1,000 years of royal history, numerous surprising stories and ghostly encounters have been reported. Whether it is claims of dead Kings and Queens making unexpected reappearances in Windsor Castle, or spooky figures being spotted moments before the nation falls into peril.

However, when it comes to the most unexpected spooky tale, it would have to be the rumour that a ghost named Peter the Wild Boy haunted Prince Louis's former nursery at Kensington Palace.

While it is still their official office, Prince William and Princess Kate moved out of Apartment 1A of Kensington Palace back in 2022 and relocated to Adelaide Cottage on the Windsor Estate. There will soon be further change as the Wales family will move a few miles away to their "forever home", Forest Lodge.

Peter the Wild Boy, who was brought over from Hanover by King George I due to his fascination with the boy's unique lifestyle of living in the woods and inability to speak, is believed to have suffered from the rare genetic disorder Pitt-Hopkins syndrome.

After arriving in Britain in 1726, the then-Princess of Wales showed great concern for his wellbeing, but all attempts to teach him speech or writing were unsuccessful.

A portrait featuring Peter at George I's court hangs in Kensington Palace today. It's believed that Peter lived until the age of 70 and his final resting place is St Mary's Church in Northchurch near Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire.

This wasn't the first report of ghostly activity at Kensington Palace. Back in the 1970s, Princess Margaret's housekeeper claimed she saw a woman dressed in Regency-style clothing in the apartment and that she and the butler were woken up by a terrifying scream in the middle of the night - despite being the only people in the building at the time.

There have also been reports of sightings of the ghosts of Queen Caroline and Queen Victoria's aunt, Princess Sophia, who was seen at a spinning wheel. Many guards and residents have confessed to witnessing these spectres or hearing odd noises within the palace grounds.

It's even rumoured that King George II still haunts the palace, his spirit lamenting over his lost soldiers from the Seven Years' War, crying out, "Why won't they come?"
