CPM adopts resolution against Wakf bill

Madurai: In the wake of the BJP govt at the Centre passing the controversial Wakf bill in Parliament, CPM politburo member B V Raghavulu on Saturday said the party adopted a resolution against the bill.

Several resolutions were adopted by the 24th congress of the CPM being held in Madurai. Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the event, Raghavulu said, "CPM has demanded immediate withdrawal of the divisive and unjust Wakf Amendment Act. The resolution was introduced by Elamaram Kareem, member of the Central Committee, and seconded by Anju Kar, also CC member."

Other resolutions included one demanding restoration of full statehood and democracy, and ensuring rapid development of Jammu and Kashmir, expressing solidarity with Cuba and condemning inhuman economic blockade imposed by the US. Withdrawal of national policy framework on agricultural marketing, recognizing basic needs as fundamental rights, demanding extension of reservations for SCs, STs, and OBCs to the private sector were also adopted as resolutions. Besides these, resolutions were adopted to resist privatisation of the public electricity sector, oppose deep-sea mining, address increasing violence against women and children, and to combat drug addiction among youth. Resolutions to ensure equal rights and dignity for LGBTQ+ individuals, ensuring dignity and justice for the disabled, and opposing UGC draft regulations, were also adopted.

Raghavulu said 53 delegates participated in the discussions on the political resolution, in which CPM politburo coordinator Prakash Karat participated and replied to the discussions.

Presenting the party statistics, Raghavulu said, "Party membership increased since the last party congress, from 9,85,757 in 2021 to 10,19,009 in 2024. The percentage of women members in the party increased from 18.2% to 20.2% in 2024. The percentage of youth in the party also saw an increase from 19.5% in 2021 to 22.6% in 2024," he added.
