PUNE: The Warje Malwadi police on Friday night searched the Karvenagar office and residence of Nilesh Chavan, who allegedly threatened Vaishnavi Hagawane's father, Anil Kaspate, at gunpoint when the latter went to his home to seek custody of the victim's nine-month-old baby.

Chavan is currently wanted for questioning by police who are investigating if Vaishnavi's death was suicide or murder, as alleged by her family. He also faces charges under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act. He is a business associate of Shashank Hagawane, Vaishnavi's husband.

Shashank, along with his father Rajendra, were expelled from NCP after allegations emerged they harassed Vaishnavi for dowry.

Senior inspector Anil Vibhute of Bavdhan police said: "We are searching for Chavan. His name has been included in the dowry case and we have also invoved sections of the JJ Act against him. After Vaishnavi's death, the Hagawane family moved her child to Chavan's home in Karvenagar. Vaishnavi's family have claimed Chavan did not properly care for the child."

About Friday's search at Chavan's home, deputy commissioner of police (Zone III) Sambhaji Kadam said on Saturday: "We recovered a laptop from his office. Nothing incriminating was found at his home. The searches were conducted in the presence of Chavan's parents."

Kadam added the laptop would be sent to the forensic lab for password cracking as part of efforts to recover data that may or may not be relevant to the investigation.

Late on Thursday night, police registered a case against Chavan after Vaishnavi's father Anil said he was threatened with a revolver by Chavan when he sought the custody of his grandson. Investigations have revealed that besides Chavan's gun licence, Pune police had also issued firearms licences to Shashank Hagawane and his brother Sushil, for self-protection in 2022, DCP Kadam said.

A proposal has now been submitted to city police commissioner to cancel these firearms licences. Senior inspector Vishwajeet Kaingade of Warje Malwadi police said the commissionerate has served a notice to Chavan's family, seeking an explanation as to why his .32 bore revolver licence should not be revoked.

SI Kaingade said Chavan's family has also been notified to join the police investigation.
