Periyar University hosts workshop on climate literacy

SALEM: The Centre for Climate Change and Disaster Risk Management (CCCDRM) and the department of environmental science at Periyar University , Salem, on Saturday conducted a workshop titled ‘Climate literacy and its role for a sustainable future .’

This workshop was meant for school teachers engaged in eco-clubs and in environmental projects, which are funded by the Tamil Nadu Climate Change Mission (TNCCM) and the state govt’s department of environment and climate change.

More than 175 teachers participated in the workshop. They shared their green initiatives and explored new opportunities during the workshop.


K Jayaraman, dean of the college development council at Periyar University, welcomed the participants. Vice-chancellor R Jagannathan highlighted the difference between weather and climate with clear examples and addressed the effects of consumerism on the environment in today's climate context.

CCCDRM director P Thangavel said the workshop's objective was to help teachers and students understand climate change in their own environments, promoting the development of sustainable and climate-resilient communities.

D Arulbalachandran, deputy director of the university's campus development centre, said climate literacy was essential for equipping individuals to effectively address and adapt to climate change, aligning with the state’s goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2050.

P Selvam, the district eco coordinator for Salem, delivered the vote of thanks.
