Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh govt has allocated Rs 1.12 crore in 2025-26 to the department of women and child development welfare to provide financial assistance to dowry victims and widows from economically backward families under four schemes.
The govt approved the release of an instalment of Rs 56 lakh for immediate assistance to such persons.
A govt spokesperson said this year, the govt has decided to allocate approximately Rs 9 lakh to support women facing dowry-related challenges and another Rs 8 lakh for legal assistance. An initial instalment of Rs 9.50 lakh has been approved under this head.
For the marriages of widows' daughters, the govt has allocated Rs 70 lakh to ensure that such families do not face any financial hindrances. Another scheme has been introduced to reward men who marry widows, with an initial instalment of Rs 12.50 lakh approved out of a total of Rs 25 lakh.
"This initiative aims to foster a positive outlook towards widows and enhance their dignity in society. The govt is committed to the upliftment and safety of women. This funding will provide relief not only to dowry victims but also offer a new lease on life to widows and their daughters. This initiative is a step towards making UP a safe and prosperous state for women," the official said.
