NEW DELHI: Stand-up comedian Samay Raina appeared before the Guwahati Crime Branch on Saturday in connection with a case filed against him and other influencers for allegedly promoting obscenity and vulgar content in the YouTube show India’s Got Latent.
Raina had earlier informed the police that he was abroad for a comedy tour and unable to comply with the summons. However, he appeared on Saturday to record his statement, officials confirmed.
Joint Police Commissioner Ankur Jain told ANI that Raina was questioned by the investigating officer and his statement recorded as part of the ongoing probe. The case, registered on February 10, names several popular content creators including Ashish Chanchlani, Jaspreet Singh, Apoorva Makhija, Ranveer Allahbadia, and others.
The FIR was registered under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), IT Act, Cinematograph Act, and the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act.
“We have served notices to the individuals named in the FIR, including Raina, Chanchlani, Allahbadia, and others. Legal procedure is being followed,” Jain said.
In light of the controversy, Raina announced the rescheduling of his India tour, assuring fans via Instagram that refunds will be provided for booked tickets. “You all will get the refunds shortly, see you soon,” he posted.
Meanwhile, Ranveer Allahbadia, also named in the FIR, issued a public apology for a viral comment he made during an episode, admitting that his remarks were inappropriate and lacked humour.
"Comedy is not my forte... my comment wasn't even funny. I apologise,” he said, vowing to use his platform more responsibly.
Influencer Rakesh Sawant, who also appeared on the show, was summoned by the Maharashtra Cyber Cell and recorded her statement on February 27.
