The Edmonton Oilers have been without their superstar captain, Connor McDavid, since he suffered a lower-body injury on March 20 during a game against the Winnipeg Jets. While the team has managed to stay competitive in his absence, fans are eager to know when their franchise player will be back in action. Fortunately, there is a promising update on his recovery timeline.
Insider report suggests Connor McDavid could return before the regular season ends
NHL insider Pierre LeBrun recently provided a significant update on McDavid’s status in The Athletic, offering a clearer picture of when he might be back on the ice.
“The world No. 1, who joined his teammates for the morning skate in Vegas on Tuesday in a non-contact sweater, has been out since suffering a lower-body injury in a game on March 20,” LeBrun wrote.
“The Oilers say they expect No. 97 back before the end of the regular season. More specifically, they don’t expect him on this current road trip, which wraps up Monday night in Anaheim, but they are looking sometime within the last stretch of five games for his return.”
While there is no official return date yet, the expectation is that McDavid will be back in the lineup in the final week of the regular season.
How the Oilers have coped in Connor McDavid’s absence and the role of Leon Draisaitl
Despite missing their captain, the Oilers have remained a strong force in the Pacific Division, thanks in large part to Leon Draisaitl. The German forward has stepped up in a big way, leading the NHL in goals with 52 and keeping Edmonton in playoff contention.
McDavid’s injury, while concerning, has given him some much-needed rest after a grueling season that included a short offseason and international play at the 4 Nations tournament.
Head coach Kris Knoblauch has emphasized that while they want McDavid back before the playoffs, his full recovery is the top priority. “It should be before the regular season ends,” Knoblauch said. “I think the most important thing is he's healthy and 100 percent for the playoffs.”
