NEW DELHI: The European Tour had finally made it official. Big-time golf is returning to Delhi Golf Club , with the announcement of the much-awaited DP World India Championship . The new $4 million tournament is in fact the biggest prize money ever offered at a golf event in India.

Top stars, including Masters winner Rory McIlroy , are rumoured to be part of the field although the names will be confirmed later in the year. But there is a big chance there will be a stellar cast because of the positioning of the event in the schedule.

Slated for Oct 16 to 19, the event will be the penultimate stop of the ‘Back 9’ phase, building towards the season-ending Play-Offs and culminating in the DP World Tour Championship at Jumeirah Golf Estates in Dubai.

With the tournament co-sanctioned with the Professional Golf Tour of India ( PGTI ), it also offers a platform for local golfers.
"The tournament provides a great opportunity for our professionals to rub shoulders with some of the best players in the world and gain valuable international exposure," said PGTI president Kapil Dev.

The tournament also marks the Tour’s return to DGC for the first time since 2016, when SSP Chawrasia won the first of his two Indian Open titles. There have been 3 European Tour events at the DGC till date - all won by Indians. Chawrasia also won the EMAAR-MGF Masters in 2008 while Anirban Lahiri claimed the Indian Open here in 2015.

The announcement follows the success of February's $2.25 million Hero Indian Open at the DLF Golf & Country Club, which was won by Spaniard Eugenio Chacarra, and further boosts the Tour’s momentum in the region.

Overall, it's the 14th European event to be held in the country.

DGC's Lodhi Championship Course hosted the inaugural Indian Open in 1964 and was redesigned by Peter Thomson in 1977, with further enhancements by Gary Player Design in 2019.
