NEW DELHI: The Allahabad high court on Friday dismissed a revision petition filed by Congress MP Rahul Gandhi , challenging an order by the MP/MLA Special Court in Varanasi.
The case relates to remarks made by Rahul Gandhi about Sikhs during his visit to the United States in September 2024.
In his petition, Rahul had contested the Special Court’s decision in Varanasi, which had accepted a complaint filed against him.
The court on November 28, 2024 rejected the application for FIR against Gandhi and said purported speech was given in the US, so it was beyond its jurisdiction.
One Nageshwar Mishra of Varanasi had filed an application before the court of ACJM, Varanasi, which after hearing the matter on November 28, 2024 rejected the application seeking the registration of FIR against Rahul, while observing that the speech was given in America, so this matter was outside its jurisdiction.
Varanasi resident Mishra had tried to register an FIR against this statement with Sarnath police station of Varanasi but when he did not succeed, he filed an application for registration of FIR against Rahul Gandhi before the district court.
During a programme in America in Sept 2024, Gandhi had allegedly said that the environment in India was not good for Sikhs. There was protest against his statement, calling it provocative and divisive in the society.
