Lexus Reimagines Its Flagship Sedan With Electric Powertrains, Expanded Dimensions, and Concept-Inspired Styling

SHANGHAI — Lexus has taken the wraps off the eighth-generation 2026 Lexus ES at the Auto Shanghai 2025, delivering the most significant overhaul to the luxury sedan since its last major update in 2018. The revamped ES introduces fresh design language, an all-electric variant, and a spacious, tech-centric interior, reinforcing its position as the brand’s global flagship sedan.

Incorporating cues from the LF-ZL concept, the new ES brings together sharper surfaces, reduced visual clutter, and improved aerodynamics. One of the most notable changes is the removal of the oversized spindle grille, now replaced with a refined, integrated front fascia that signals the shift toward a new design direction.

Design and Dimensions: Larger and More Streamlined

The 2026 ES is longer, wider, and taller than its predecessor. A longer wheelbase enhances passenger space, especially in the rear cabin. At the back, Lexus has introduced a continuous light bar with bold “LEXUS” lettering, replacing the traditional logo.

The EV variant is identified by a charging port on the front fender, marking a new era for the sedan with battery-electric propulsion joining the lineup.

Interior and Features: Tech-Laden and Minimalist

The interior embraces a modern, minimal aesthetic, shedding the brand’s previous button-heavy layouts. Key features include:

  • 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster

  • 14-inch touchscreen infotainment system

  • Touch-sensitive controls and a physical volume knob

  • Optional front passenger display screen

  • Compact electronic gear selector

  • Dimmable panoramic glass roof

  • Rear seat options: Massaging functionality and individual climate zones in higher trims

Lexus also debuts a 3D-printed bamboo-style trim, blending sustainability with premium craftsmanship.

Powertrains and Performance: Hybrid and EV Options

The 2026 Lexus ES will offer two hybrid and two electric variants globally:

  • Hybrid Options:

    • 2.0L (not available in the U.S.)

    • 2.5L hybrid (U.S.-bound)

  • Electric Variants:

    • ES 350e (Front-Wheel Drive)

    • ES 500e (All-Wheel Drive)

Power outputs range from 221 bhp to 338 bhp, with CLTC-estimated range up to 685 km — final figures may vary for global markets.

Performance improvements include all-wheel steering and a multi-link rear suspension, providing sharper dynamics and a smoother ride.

A New Chapter for Lexus’ Executive Sedan

The 2026 Lexus ES represents a bold evolution in Lexus design and strategy, signaling the brand’s commitment to electrification, luxury innovation, and driver-focused engineering. With a compelling mix of elegance, performance, and sustainability, the ES is poised to remain a key player in the premium sedan market globally.
