BHUBANESWAR: Biju Janata Dal (BJD) supremo Naveen Patnaik was re-elected as party president for a record ninth consecutive term unanimously, marking his continued leadership in the regional party.
In his first address to party leaders following the election, Naveen acknowledged the 2024 electoral defeat while emphasising the party's organisational strength. "We missed the last election by a narrow margin despite securing more popular votes," he said, attributing this to inadequate countering of what he termed "false narratives" against the party.
The BJD chief stressed the urgent need to enhance the party's social media presence. "We must be aggressive in exposing false narratives, especially on social media platforms. Technology is crucial for reaching out to people and communicating facts effectively," he stated.
Highlighting the party's grassroots strength, he added, "No one should underestimate BJD's organisational capabilities. Our workers' spirit remains high, and they are our real assets."The former CM also characterised the period from 2000-2024—when he was Odisha CM—as the "Golden Age" in Odisha's development.
While Naveen's re-election was largely procedural, political observers are closely watching the composition of the new state council and 80-member state executive committee, which could indicate significant leadership changes within the party.
Addressing the state council meeting following his election, Naveen expressed gratitude to party members and emphasised the party's organisational strength, highlighting the dedication of its grassroots workers. "Our workers are our real asset, and their spirit remains high," the veteran politician declared, adding that the party's policies and ideals are its cornerstone.
Outlining BJD's vision, the BJD chief stressed the party's commitment to empowering various sections of society, including women, farmers, youth, workers, and tribal communities. He reaffirmed BJD's dedication to regional development and protecting Odisha's interests.
"Whether in govt or not, BJD will continue to serve the people of Odisha," he assured, emphasising that the party's fight for the state's rights would persist. He concluded by asserting that Odia pride and Odisha's interests remain paramount for the party.
